Assistant Production Editor

Status: Full-time, permanent

Location: Rockville, Maryland

Education: B.A. in English, journalism, communications, or health-related field

Experience:

  • One to three years of editorial and proofreading experience, including production coordination
  • Federal contracting experience preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge of Federal GPO stylistic standards for editorial documents
  • Proficiency in HTML and PDF required
  • Experience with MS Access and Excel is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Aptitude for grammar and editing
  • Interest in public health issues
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and to meet tight-turnaround deadlines
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing client and team needs in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently as well as within a team

Responsibilities: The major day-to-day functions of the Assistant Production Editor include, but are not limited to:

  • Copyediting and proofreading written and electronic (Web content) text/materials to ensure that communications products are clear, consistent, logical, grammatically correct, and error-free
  • Copyediting and proofreading documents to ensure they conform to the stylistic standards (GPO) established by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ]
  • Assisting with coordination of print and Web production, including task intake and the tracking of multiple publications
  • Consulting with senior editors, writers, and graphic artists on the clarification of document content and/or edits
  • Ensuring that quality control steps are followed during multiple review and editing cycles
  • Coordinating the posting of new materials to the AHRQ Web and Intranet sites
  • Formatting word processed documents for Web-only posting and printing, and preparing HTML and PDF versions of documents
  • Responding to queries, problems, and recommendations regarding materials in the review process
  • Taking on special projects as assigned
