Assistant Editor

Position: Part-time/3 days a week

Location: Washington, DC

Education: B.A. in English, journalism, communications, or biology or other health-related field

Experience:

  • One to three years editorial and proofreading experience, including production coordination
  • Federal contracting experience preferred, but not required
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently and with a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Aptitude for grammar and editing
  • Interest in public health issues
  • Knowledge of GPO stylistic standards for editorial documents
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and to meet tight-turnaround (same-day) deadlines

Responsibilities: The major day-to-day functions of the Assistant Editor include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring that quality control steps are followed during multiple review and editing cycles
  • Copyediting and proofreading documents to ensure they conform to the stylistic standards (GPO) established by USAID and/or the AIM Activity
  • Copyediting and proofreading written and electronic (Web content) text/materials to ensure that these communications products are clear, consistent, logical, grammatically correct, and error-free
  • Consulting with Senior Editor and Senior Communications Specialist/Writer to incorporate comments and corrections to material produced by AIM and to clarify document content and/or edits
  • Assisting Publications Manager with coordination of print and Web production and dissemination of materials produced by AIM
  • Taking on special projects assigned by Production Manager and/or Communications Director, including support for special events and local exhibits
  • Maintaining contact with communications managers and AIM Activity technical area team members on progress, queries, problems, and recommendations regarding materials in the review process.
