Status: Full-time, permanent

Location: Rockville, Maryland

Education: B.A. or B.S. in Biology, English, Journalism, communications, or other science or health-related field

Experience:

  • Five to eight years of editorial and publications experience
  • Knowledge of GPO Style standards
  • Experience working in support of NIH or other Federal Government clients preferred, but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and meet tight turnaround deadlines
  • Ability to work well with clients and senior-level professionals in a team environment

Responsibilities: The major day-to-day functions of the Editor include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as lead Senior Science Editor for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Communications contract, providing full editorial support on all relevant materials
  • Editing for clarity, expression, punctuation, style, grammar, and adherence to GPO Style and client specifications
  • Researching and fact-checking of science-related communications products
  • Providing ongoing management support for assignments and ensuring project deadlines are met
  • Handling multiple editing tasks simultaneously while working under deadline
  • Maintaining frequent contact with client and staff at all levels to ensure timely delivery of products
  • Editing file documents in MS Word with electronic track-changes
  • Coordinating print and Web production with the graphics department
  • Occasionally attending conferences as a note-taker to write meeting summaries
  • Copyediting media, business development, and promotional materials as needed
