Health Communications Specialist

Location: Washington, DC

Education: BA in Journalism, Communications, English or related field

Experience:

  • Familiarity with and knowledge of global health issues and an understanding of USAID’s work preferred
  • Minimum five years of communications experience with excellent writing and Web research skills
  • Skill in writing and rewriting a variety of public health communications materials
  • Skill in developing material for publication on the Internet
  • Ability to respond quickly and readily adapt to new and changing priorities and assignments
  • Demonstrated ability to work with internal and/or external clients and provide required services
  • Skilled in message development, including press releases
  • Self-motivated, flexible and able to work independently and with a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong interest/background in journalism and/or news

Responsibilities: The major day-to-day functions of the Communications Specialist/Editor include, but are not limited to:

  • Works with Director of Communications to seek out opportunities for expanding reach of USAID’s communications to new audiences, identifying potential for cross-cutting communications products, and capitalizing on use of a variety of media to disseminate USAID’s messages.
  • Works with AIM analysis, knowledge management, and communications to identify and create new communication opportunities and materials about global health achievements, topics and issues for USAID.
  • Serves as one of the editors for all products and publications in a variety of media that are produced for USAID by the Analysis, Information Management & Communications Activity (AIM).
  • Uses knowledge of USAID programs and publication/public health issues to guarantee quality of content.
