Science Writer

Position: Full-time, permanent

Location: Rockville, Maryland

Education: B.A. or higher degree in English, journalism, communications, or biology or other field related to health research

Experience:

  • Seven or more years of science writing for professional or lay audiences
  • Understanding of medical research, especially in neuroscience or drug abuse
  • Advanced skills in story generation, reporting, and writing
  • Good interviewing and presentation skills
  • Attentive to publication style
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently as well as within a team
  • Able to work under pressure

Responsibilities: The major day-to-day functions of the Science Writer include, but are not limited to:

  • Keeping abreast of developments in drug abuse research by monitoring literature, attending NIDA-sponsored meetings, and talking with project officers and other sources at NIDA
  • Generating article ideas by researching recently published literature and talking with investigators and project officers
  • Preparing and presenting in-depth proposals for articles
  • Reporting and writing articles based on published research on drug abuse and interviews
  • Developing art concepts to accompany stories for submission
  • Adhering to established style guidelines and consistently meeting deadlines for editorial board preparation, writing, and rewriting
  • Reporting and writing for special supplements and projects, as assigned
  • Participate in MasiMax proposal preparation, as necessary
