This health communications company runs conference and exhibits, distributes newsletters and press releases about new medical findings, and runs public education programs about diseases like AIDS and diabetes. Its biggest customer is the federal government. Founder Marilyn Massey has a master’s degree from Yale School of Public Health, but says her start-up company couldn’t have survived without the help of the SBA’s 8(a) program, which helps smaller companies get government contracts.
Special Service: The company’s environmental health and safety team, which assesses occupational hazards, worked around the clock during the anthrax scare in late 2001.
Best Assets: Massey recommends employing a knowledgeable CFO, fostering a good relationship with a bank and accountant, and paying all your bills on time.
